VIVID Sydney

Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas held between 27th May and 18th June, is a time when the city transforms into a night wonderland. With spectacular events such as 3D projections, laser light shows and illuminated buildings, there is entertainment for all ages. Circular Quay being at the heart of the Vivid celebrations, the waterside is lined with around 60 light art sculptures and illuminations forming the Vivid Light Walk, with the highlight being the projection show on the Sydney Opera House. This year (2016) the Sails are celebrating the Australian Indigenous Art, illustrating the spirituality and culture of the Australian native people.

The Vivid Light Walk extended from The Rocks to the Customs House, featuring a marvellous projection show illuminating the entire Museum of Contemporary Art on the way. The Customs House played a short movie, ‘The Hidden Secrets’, projected onto the buildings face.

Another highlight was The Cathedral of Lights, a lit up tunnel 60m long and 8m tall, at the Botantical Gardens Sydney which was celebrating their 200 year anniversary. Following The Cathedral of Lights there was a trail through the gardens illuminating trees and bushes throughout the walk.

The Vivid cruises and were also decorated with lights as they sailed around the harbour.

Darling Harbour also provided entertainment with laser light shows and 3D light projections accompanied with fire displays and fireworks. Not equally as busy as Circular Quay it was without doubt still buzzing. Dining on the waterfront offered a remarkable view.

This year in order to celebrate Taronga Zoo’s 100th anniversary, vivid lights featured a light trail of some of the zoos animals such as the Echidna, Corroboree Frog, Asian elephants, Pangolin and many more. We did not take part but during our day time Taronga Zoo visit we saw all the sculptures in place around the zoo.
